The box under the tree was bigger than she expected – but what had she expected? She didn’t really know. She picked it up – it was light – and shook it gently. Nothing rattled.
“Open it.” He smiled at her.
Her fingers trembled as she untied the silk ribbon and carefully tore away the paper. She hesitated before lifting the cover. What would be inside?
Words!! Hundreds of them, thousands of them, came tumbling out of the box as she opened it. They sailed through the air, landing in her hair, her mouth, on her breasts. Words shimmered in the tree, in her mind’s-eye, in her heart.
“Oh,” she breathed in slowly. “They’re beautiful!”
“Yes.”

Oh how creative! And beautiful! A box of words, the perfect gift for a writer!
I hope there’s a box of words under my tree, I need them.
Great flash fiction, very creative.
Thanks, DS and Dayner. OF COURSE there’s a big box of words under your tree for you. Don’t you see it there? It’s the one wrapped in sparkly tissue paper with the multi-colored ribbon. The one with the tag that says “Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays from Natasha!”
I love this, it gave me the shivers! So lyrical and creative…thanks!!
Thanks, Kathan! There’s a big box here for you, too: Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays from Natasha!
How very, very clever! I can’t imagine a more wonderful gift than the one you’ve described here.
If you experience writer’s block, you can open the box lid a smidgen and gain inspiration from the words that float before you.
Great job, Nancy.
Thanks, Shaddy! And a big box for you, too! I’ll put it on the table next to your Northpointe bag!
